Piggy Bank and more and more

SIMILE Project at MIT

Do you remember Piggy bank, a javascript-based very useful screenscrapper that extract data from web pages?

The same research team is now working in exhibits : an information visualizer in webpage form. This is a  JSON serialized RDF mashup of information. This project try to achieve a very well known goal of the semantic comunity : make RFD applications in a transparent way. Something like: do RDF without doing it. The question is how will we get people to create RDF data sets in ways and for purposes meaningful to them?

May be is too early in our research to make this kind of questions.. but at the end, this problem will still be there… so.. he have to keep on mind user-friendly datasets creation when working with semantics.

Tagging real-life objects

For lost objects labels could be a way to go back home.. off course in a honest world… Could we call that augmented reality? If we can do so.. my mother also augmented the reality of all my shirts and pencils when I was a child…

Ubimedia and the mobile as universal remote control approach

In most of the research about ubiquitous computing the mobile phone have a central position because it is an everyday / everywhere object . In emergent countries for example, people must choose between pc/internet expenses or mobile phone expenses, and guess what ? mobile phone is winning! So we can supposed that this object will be the second more popular ubiquitous personal object rigth after the watch.

This object can be then considered like as almost a universal remote control for your life. For example, if you want to park your F1 car, you have here your problem solved :

Carville on digital homes research

Razorfish living labs experimental test of table games for Microsoft Surface..Tired of waiting for your car to be repaired? You can play in the waiting room with a game that makes you remember that your car is not already repaired and that you’re stocked in a waiting room while in the game every body seems to drive whitout any problem:

OpenCalais: an absolute must

Calais is a toolkit of capabilities that allow you to readily incorporate state-of-the-art semantic functionality within website or application. Calais uses natural language processing technologies delivered via a web service interface. It generates automatically a RDF-structured knowledge file.

And now Google Voice is on the run..

Today Goggle enters in the run of mobile phones market with the new Google voice service. Formerly  Grand Central this telecommunication service provision an unique number who centralizes all the voice communications. If we can supposed (as we do) that this will be followed by a good number of APIs and Webservices to support new and innovative voice integration into Google web apps ecosystem.. this annonce can be very relevant to our research.

Some features @Wikipedia :

Google Voice has retained many of GrandCentral’s features, with several additions.

  • A single Google forwarding number to all of the user’s phones
  • Free calls and SMS in the US and Canada
  • Calling international phone numbers for as low as US$0.02 per minute
  • Call screening. Announcement of callers based on their number or by an automated identification request for blocked numbers
  • Listening in on someone’s recording of a voice message before taking a call
  • Blocking calls from specified numbers
  • Send, receive, and store SMS online
  • Answering incoming calls on any configured phone
  • Call routing. Selection of phones that should ring based on calling number
  • Voicemail transcripts. Reading of voicemail messages online
  • Listening to voicemail online or from a phone
  • Notification of voicemail messages via email or SMS
  • Personalized greetings based on calling number
  • Forward or downloading of voicemails
  • Conference calling
  • Call recording and online archiving
  • Switching of phones during a call
  • Viewing the web inbox from a mobile device/phone
  • Customize preferences for contacts by group
  • Ability to change your number for a fee
  • Specifying an existing phone number instead of the Google Voice number on initial setup for use with limited functionality, such as some voicemail functions.[16] and using the voice mail system for the user’s phone number (mobile devices only).[17]

Now : UPnP into GPAC

upnp

Since this week, GPAC team maked a few succesful tests with UPnP and the framework.

Soon we will be able to implement some nice UPnP-based apps with GPAC!

The test have been made in a Samsung mobile.

iPhone remote control

I ask to myself how will I fight for the remote control with my brother if we both have “the power” in our pockets…? I’m curious about the “how to share” rules that digital homes will produce.

U-city

songdo

Songdo City in Korea

Thanks to korean people, we have a real-life example of what ubimedia could be in the futur and also  what can we do to regulate and humanize this new kind of urbanism.

Read  : Songdo in NYTimes

@ Wikipedia : A ubiquitous city or U-city is a city or region with ubiquitous information technology. All information systems are linked, and virtually everything is linked to an information system through technologies such as wireless networking and RFID tags.
